B. The Costs of War (04/22)
In commemoration of five years of the U.S.-led War in Iraq,
The Muslim Students Association of the University of California, Berkeley,
presents
The Costs of War: The U.S. in Iraq - 5 Years Now, How Much More?
A Forum for Candid Discussion
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
6-9 PM
145 Dwinelle Hall
Free and Open to the Public
Distant and invisible as it may seem, the present war in Iraq is intimately connected to our daily lives and the lives of those around us. Be it the thousands of families mourning loved ones lost in military service, the social and psychological impact of war on its survivors, or the draconian budget cuts affecting our public schools, hospitals and civil services across the country, the American public has shouldered enormous costs of a war that began with the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq on March 20, 2003. While these consequences take place in our own cities and neighborhoods, in Iraq the immeasurable suffering of men, women, and children continues unabated with no clear end in sight. . .
As the world marks five years of this ongoing conflict, this forum presents a diverse panel of speakers for an evening of spirited discussion and critical engagement on the past, present, and future costs of war.

He worked on immigration issues at the East Palo Alto Community Law Project, pending death penalty cases at the California Appellate Project, and "gender discrimination and religious clause issues." What is the nature of totalitarian Islam - is it limited to terrorism or is it a broader movement? Are non-Muslims its only victims? Who precisely is the enemy? Does the West bear responsibility for creating this movement? What policies can defeat it?

4. Volunteer Opportunity
Peace Action West is the largest grassroots peace and social justice lobby in the western states, working to abolish nuclear weapons, end international arms trafficking, and build international cooperation to prevent and end war for the past 50 years. We are a non-profit and non-partisan organization located in Berkeley.
Peace Action West is looking for volunteers to help stop a new generation of nuclear weapons. The Bush administration and the Department of Energy are asking for two nuclear weapons programs to be funded, the Reliable Replacement Warhead and Complex Transformation. These dangerous programs create the infrastructure to produce more nuclear weapons and new nuclear warhead designs each year.
We are looking for volunteers who will gather petitions to help stop nuclear weapons funding. Petitioning to stop nukes is fun, easy, and the hours are flexible. Spend a few hours enjoying the outdoors while gathering petitions in public locations, such as BART stations, farmer's markets, or downtown areas in cities like El Cerrito, Walnut Creek, Concord, and Kensington. Personal vehicles not required. This can be an ongoing volunteer opportunity for those who are interested. Opportunities to take on more responsibility and recruit, train, and lead other volunteers are available. Open to individuals and groups.
Peace Action West has a goal of gathering 10,000 petition signatures in key congressional districts in the Bay Area and will use the petitions to:
- Encourage Congress to block funding for nuclear weapons
- Prove that voters want a new nuclear policy
- Create a public debate and educate the community
For details, please contact Peace Action West Deputy Political Director Cara Bautista at (510) 849 – 2272 ext. 122 or email her at cbautista (at) peaceationwest.org.
You can read more about the issue and our work to stop nuclear weapons on our website under Campaigns: US Nuclear Weapons. Go to www.PeaceActionWest.org.
